Insempra GmbH. (11/10/23). "Press Release: Insempra Wins €1.5M Disruptive Innovation Grant with Circular Biomanufacturing Concept »BioTreasure«". Munich.
Insempra, a biology-powered company enabling businesses to make superior products with nature, has been elected for €1.5 million in funding from The Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation, SPRIND, in their 2023 circular biomanufacturing challenge for its innovative biomanufacturing prototype, ‘BioTreasure’.
The Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation, SPRIND supports new innovations and technologies by setting various challenges every year, enabling research institutions, universities, and businesses to compete for funding and expert support in accomplishing key social, ecological, and economic challenges of our time.
Insempra set forth its innovative prototype “BioTreasure” for the SPRIND circular biomanufacturing challenge, which was set to develop an end-to-end prototype that processes various carbonaceous waste streams into new products as a continuous bioproduction process. The prototype is required to demonstrate how carbonaceous waste streams can be processed and fed to microbes as feedstock. Additionally, it must demonstrate continuous production over a period of at least 180 days, resulting in different products being produced using a modern manufacturing process, such as additive manufacturing.
Insempra is proud that the funding also recognizes its pioneering role in circular biomanufacturing practices and at the same time enables the company to expand these activities further. The prototype will help to reduce industry dependencies on resource-intensive materials whilst mitigating waste by utilizing PET/plastic waste, cooking oil waste and second-generation plant waste as resources for its circular biomanufacturing prototype.
By combining industry changing breakthrough technologies such as waste upcycling, continuous fermentation and innovative reactor design, Insempra has developed a circular biomanufacturing prototype that will enable the development of different ingredients/products that can be used as bio-based alternatives for high-tech applications. Thus, Insempra supports the achievement of ESG goals as the current solutions are petroleum derived and Insempra’s technology enables these high-tech applications via means of sustainable circular biomanufactured ingredients.
“As a biology-powered business, establishing circular manufacturing processes has always been one of our highest priorities. Our prototype ‘BioTreasure’, has the potential to revolutionize industries by providing sustainable, vegan and bio-based alternatives for certain materials, maximizing resource efficiency, environmental stewardship and reducing reliance on fossil fuel or other resources extracted from nature. We are excited to embark on this challenge with SPRIND’s support and are incredibly proud of our team.” says Jens Klein, CEO & Founder of Insempra.
The SPRIND challenge will commence from November 2023 for a total of three years. Key objectives of the challenge are to support feedstock diversity and demonstrate the economic viability and market competitiveness of circular biomanufacturing.
