The life science sector also showcased its strengths in front of the Dutch business delegation, which accompanied the royal couple Willem-Alexander and Máxima on its tour of North Germany as part of a two-day working visit. On a visit to Drägerwerke in Lübeck on March 19, the royal couple met selected representatives of the healthcare industry and discussed current topics. At the following presentation arranged by the Life Science Nord Cluster in the Emporio building in Hamburg three innovative firms and one research institute were able to showcase their products and activities:

· The Hamburg company connected-health.eu GmbH is developing a hub for data traffic between doctors and patients via smartphones and won top prize in the category “Idea Contribution” of the app contest organized by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. Connected-health.eu was also one of the 50 startup finalists in the “CODE_n” competition at CeBIT.

· The biotech firm KSK Diagnostics GmbH, supported by the Hamburg Innovationstarter Fund’s “InnoRampUp” program, is aiming to develop a DNA analysis based on an especially fast point-of-care test.

· Sonormed GmbH also receives funding from the “InnoRampUp” program. Its Tinnitracks product offers a tinnitus therapy endorsed by the latest neuroscientific findings and based on specially filtered music. Sonormed was a winner in the SXSW (South by Southwest) technology conference’s startup competition in the U.S. in the digital health and life science category.

· The field of research was represented by the Fraunhofer MEVIS Project Group from Lübeck, which uses image registration to combine and compare information from various patient images.

“As direct neighbors of the Netherlands, we are delighted to welcome the Dutch delegation and see this as an opportunity to showcase our strengths in life sciences, learn from each other and set the course for closer collaboration in the future,” said Dr. Hinrich Habeck, Managing Director of Life Science Nord Management GmbH. At the following trade dinner, company representatives had the opportunity to exchange views and make new contacts.

On 20 March, members of the delegation from the life sciences sector were shown the prototype of the world’s first human scanner with MPI (magnetic particle imaging) technology during a visit to Philips Healthcare. The delegates’ stay in Hamburg culminated in a North German-Dutch matchmaking event.

About the delegates’ trip

The two-day trip entitled “Shared Challenges, Smart Solutions: Sharing Knowledge between Germany and The Netherlands on Smart Health” headed by the Dutch foreign trade minister Lilliane Ploumen focused on energy (especially wind energy), life sciences and health. In all, representatives from about 50 companies took part in the trip.
