Definiens, the number one Enterprise Image Intelligence® company, today announced that it has joined the Digital Pathology Association (DPA), a non-profit organization committed to the advancement of digital pathology applications in healthcare. As a sponsor of the association, Definiens's support will help to advance the DPA's goal of supporting digital pathology education initiatives, defining best practices for digital pathology tools, and organizing an annual conference that addresses pressing needs within the industry.

A priority of this newly-formed association is to improve the standardization of whole slide images (WSI) and digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM). Uniform standards will make digital pathology more accessible, foster collaboration and move the industry toward a universal set of navigation tools for digital pathology. Automating digital pathology workflows provides clinical information that can be included in electronic health records, thereby expediting and better informing treatment decisions.

"Definiens has always been an advocate for open standards as our image analysis software operates consistently, irrespective of the image source. Standardization of image analysis algorithms will further contribute towards the goal of more personalized and affordable medicine," said Manfred Voglmaier, Vice President of Business Development for Definiens Life Sciences and seat holder on the DPA Industry Council. "Joining the DPA will enable us to contribute to this important effort and collaborate with leading entities in the digital pathology community."

"We are excited to welcome Definiens to the Digital Pathology Association," said Dirk Soenksen, president of the Digital Pathology Association. "Adding a company focused on image analysis software contributes significantly to our roster, and provides the DPA with guidance from companies developing solutions at every stage of the digital pathology workflow."

About the DPA

The mission of the Digital Pathology Association is to facilitate education and awareness of digital pathology applications in healthcare. Members will be encouraged to share best practices and promote the use of the technology among colleagues in order to demonstrate efficiencies, awareness, and its ultimate benefits to patient care.
